What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Well in short it is the process whereby you create a page or site that will rank highly in the search engines so when people type in the keyword that they are looking for, your page appears as one of the top results in the search engines for that keyword. Pretty simple huh?

However, when most people think about SEO, they tend to think about Google as the search engine they want to optimize their site in mind.

The reason for this is simple.

Google dominates the natural search engine landscape in both market share and the number of searches being done. If you want to get free traffic and visitors, make sure you get in the good books of Google!

In this Search Engine Optimization For Dummies article I'm going to explain to you that SEO in itself is not a science. It is very complicated and no one actually knows the right formula to get you on the first page of Google each and every time. Unless they of course work for Google and understand Google's search engine algorithm.

What I can tell you and provide you with is a set standard of things you can do to your site in order to bring me and countless others on the first page of Google.

In short, great SEO requires three things:

1. The content you have on your site
2. The keywords that you are targeting
3. The links pointing to your pages

In short, if you have great content on your site and they include the relevant keywords that you are targeting with the links from the right pages pointing to your pages, then you will do very well.

So let me break it down even further...

You need to consider what they call the on page factors of SEO and the off page factors of SEO.

I have a full article about each of the on page and off page factors required, so I do not want to go into detail about them here in this Search Engine Optimization For Dummies article. But in short:

On page SEO factors are - anything on your page that you can control. This includes the keywords you are targeting, the header tags, the meta tags and the content you have on your site.

Off page SEO factors include - anything that is not on your page and is out of your control (unless you learn from me and I'll show you how control many of the off pages factors). This includes the links pointing to your site from other places.
